redearsqI got this question from one of the ladies in the SWM Academy: “When should I quit my 9-5 job so I can focus full time on business or ministry?

I gave her my answer based on my own experience which I will like to share with you. My view happens to be from a biblical standpoint and may differ from what the world says.

You are probably in a similar position, feeling the itch and restless at work and you just want to leave but before you do. Here is ONE major point to settle.

  1. Seek God’s face and ask him when to leave.

Being in God’s will is KEY so ask for confirmation through his Word. I got my confirmation before leaving the corporate world, through scripture and events that led up to it. I had set a goal initially on when to leave but it didn’t feel right so I ask God and I felt him give me a date. So even though I didn’t know how that will happen different events happened which made it clear, it was time to leave.. I also got the support of my husband which i didn’t really have before.

Does that mean I will never go back to a 9-5 job?

If God says I should then I will..it is not a sin to work for someone else. The key thing is that you are sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit listening for his instruction and obeying.

So while you are waiting to get your confirmation from God, you need to start preparing for your exit and here are some steps to do that:

     2. Work for yourself before you go to the day job

Yes if you want to exit the 9-5 space you need to start working on your business before you go in for your day job. The mornings are the best time to dedicate to your new business when your mind is fresh and alert. If you are not a morning person you can become one. This means going to bed early so you can get quality rest and you are not waking up tired. I share some steps on how to maximise your mornings in my book Super Working Mum.

Lunch time could also be dedicated to working on your business or just relaxing.

It may be demanding but realise that it is only for a short period and that should keep you going.

3. Get help in your business

Get a virtual assistant. It will go a long way. You can’t do it all. Get a VA to help with your social media, with admin, anything else you don’t enjoy doing or anything that is not in your brilliant zone. This will save you lots of time, and energy. Check out this blog post that shares 5 areas you should outsource in your business

  1. If possible ask for flexible hours at your job

In my 9-5 job, I was able to ask to work four days a week instead of five. So Fridays were solely dedicated to my business. If you can ask to work at home do but make sure u are working for your company during those hours..and then use the time you would have commuted into work for your business. Most companies these days are willing to meet you half way especially if they see you perform well and meet or exceed your objectives.

  1. Stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit

Let Him be your guide.. don’t let money or your savings account be your guide. When God says it is time to leave…leave

Trust and obey because He will provide. Some of you reading this blog post are way overdue and it is time to leave your job. God already told you ages ago to leave but you are afraid money won’t come in. So you have decided to stay, but guess what? You are very likely stressed, overworked, unhappy and sometimes seem to be in a hostile environment.. That’s because you are doing your job in your own strength and not in God’s strength anymore..

Remember Peter in the Bible, toiled all day and night to catch fish but when he obeyed the voice of Jesus he got so much fish he had to call his friends to help with his net.

Some of you are saying “oh I can’t hear God anymore, I am not sure what he is saying”. This could be because you have not obeyed the last instruction he gave you. Why should He tell you something new, if you haven’t done anything about what he already told you?

I encourage you to repent, obey and the next set of instructions will follow.
