Start your day right

How do you start your day? Do you intentionally spend some time with God or do you jump out of the bed rushing about throughout the day. Today I want to encourage you to start your day right with having a dedicated quiet time everyday.

I know the topic of “quiet time” can be controversial. Some people don’t believe in it, some have given up on it and some do it.

Here are my thoughts on quiet time and starting your day right.

Don’t do it from a performance point of view

Firstly having quiet time shouldn’t be done from a performance point of view where we get to check it off a list. It should not be a chore but a desire burning within you.

Your quiet time should model what Jesus did constantly when he was on earth as described in Luke 5:16: “But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.

Get “charged up” like your phone

This is how Abba explained it to me and I hope I can explain it well. Most of us charge our phones at least once a day. I charge mine mainly at night. Usually (or this is how it should be) when we charge our phones we leave it to charge till it gets to 100%, then we make use of the phone till the battery depletes. Throughout the day, as we use the phone, battery runs out then we recharge at some point daily.

In the same vein, our spirit man is meant to be charged up in the secret place because throughout the day as we interact with others, do our chores, go to work, school runs, etc virtue/power flows out of us.

So it is important we start our day right in the mornings by recharging our spirit man every day and this happens during our quiet time with Abba.

Jesus was a  FULL blown man on earth and so needed to recharge daily. Hence he kept going away to pray and fellowship with his Father. THEN he carried God’s presence with him (charged up battery) throughout the day. That was why he was able to do all the amazing things he did on earth.

We also recharge and carry God’s presence with us i.e dwell with him throughout the day not just that 1 hour or 10 mins of quiet time in the morning. It all works hand in hand. A dedicated quiet time and carrying God’s presence around.

“I feel guilty when I don’t have my quiet time”

Many of us tend to feel guilty when we skip our time with God, for whatever reason. The enemy comes and accuses us that we are slacking and God doesn’t love us anymore because we are not praying or reading our Bible. Then we give up and find out we are operating on “empty” but struggle to go back to our first love.

However like Joseph Prince said once: “when you haven’t eaten in days you don’t feel guilty you feel hunger.

When your phone is dying it isn’t guilt you feel it is “how do I charge this phone to get more juice” so it can keep working.

This is how I feel when I don’t spend quality time with Abba. My perspective as changed.

I don’t feel guilt anymore since I caught this revelation but hunger for God.

Now I know that “quiet time” with Abba is non-negotiable. I know I need everyday help to start my day right and have a God filled day as well.

So again to stress my point; starting your day right is not about crossing “quiet time” off your list but having the desire and hunger to fellowship with your Father and to receive power for the day.

As you know charging your phone on the go won’t cut it if you want to use your phone efficiently neither will 1 minute prayer of “thank u lord Jesus” if we want to be all God has called us to be.

Start your day right!

So today I want to encourage you to do whatever you need to do to prioritise your time with God so that you can start your day right.

For some of you it might mean:

  • waking up earlier than you currently do
  • going to bed earlier
  • switching your phone to airplane mode so you are not distracted by emails or social media
  • being accountable to others who desire to start their days right as well
  • trying out a devotional maybe on YouVersion
  • deciding on the exact time of the day to meet with Abba
  • deciding not to feel guilty if you miss that time but resolving to do better next time.

Tell me what do you need to start doing or stop doing in order to start your day right?
