How To Dress For SuccessI know that in 2016 many of us want to live a successful life and so today I would like to share some wisdom God revealed to me during one of my Bible studies on how to dress for success.

It is widely agreed that how we dress is how we will be addressed. When we go for an interview or for a business deal meeting we dress powerfully and appropriately so that the interviewer or business can take us serious. Research has shown that you are likely going to get that job or the business deal if you are dressed for success than if you are dressed shabbily.

Now the wisdom I want to share with you is likely going to be different from what you hear or have practiced but stick with me.

Today I want to talk about a different kind of dressing which involves our attitude/character. A Nigerian Proverb says “your aroma is your character” and that people can perceive your aura from a distance through your attitude.

Imagine two women at work:

One has a very lovely attitude but is not highly skilled and the other is highly skilled but has a nasty attitude. Who do you think people will prefer to have on their team or prefer to work with?

It is more likely the person with a great attitude. This woman is more likely to succeed that the woman with the bad attitude.

How to Dress For Success

I want to share what the Bible says about dressing for success in Colossians 3: 12-14:

12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

These scriptures focus on what type of attitudes (character) we should “put on” on a daily basis.

Every day, start your day by clothing yourself with:

  1. Compassion: Being sensitive to the needs of others, or to their shortcomings.
  2. Kindness: Giving people what they need not what they deserve.
  3. Humility: This involves admitting your mistakes, and not thinking you are better than others.
  4. Gentleness and Patience: These two go hand in hand. Be gentle and easy going with the less experienced at work, in a restaurant, your children, with your clients
  5. Forgiveness: Not being easily offended but bearing with each other. Be quick to pardon others.

And then put you must put on your Overcoat “LOVE” which binds everything together in perfect unity.

But you may be wondering how do I do this?? My children annoy me, my husband doesn’t help me much, I have a terrible boss, my vendors don’t deliver on time, some of my clients are a pain to work with, the lady at the Starbucks till is slow.

Colossians 3:16a gives us the answer: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.”

When we begin to meditate on the word of Christ and it dwells in our heart: compassion, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness will flow out of our heart. We will not struggle to have a great attitude, because the word will change us from the inside out.

My encouragement to you Super Working Mum, is if your goal in 2016 is to be successful in your marriage, parenting, business, career etc then study and meditate on the word of Christ so that you are transformed from the inside out.

And like Joshua 1:8 says: This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

So tell me, which one of the 6 “attires” above- compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, forgiveness or love  do you need to put on more on a daily basis?
